Flooded Ohio River- My front yard

Posted on May 6, 2011 Written by Nibby Priest

This is an aerial photograph of the flooded Ohio River in front of my house at the downtown Henderson KY riverfront. You cannot see my house in this picture because it is hidden by the trees.

One thing they say about Henderson KY is that we are on the Ohio River but never in it.  The downtown area is very blessed not to have to be dealing with some of the flooding issues that the outlying county areas are dealing with.

This picture was taken May 6, 2011.  The picture is a high resolution photograph.  Please click on the picture for a more detailed view.

Thank you pilot Randy VanWynsberghe for sharing this picture with me.

Tomblinson Funeral Home-Henderson’s New Funeral Home

Posted on April 16, 2011 Written by Nibby Priest

Henderson Kentucky has a new funeral home that opened last month.

Tomblinson Funeral Home. They opened in the former location of Wolf’s Convention Center at 325 First Street in downtown Henderson KY.

Tomblinson Funeral Home has locations in Sebree, Earlington and Slaughters/Hanson.

The owner is Chip Tomblinson is from Hanson KY.  Chip’s daughter Leah Tomblinson graduated from Western Kentucky University in the Spring of 2011 and is working in  the Henderson Chapel.

See the advertisement below that ran recently in the local newspaper The Gleaner.

The phone for Tomblinson Funeral Home is 270.826.2544.

We are so fortunate in Henderson to have many fine funeral homes to choose from: Rudy Rowland Funeral Home, Tapp Funeral Home and Benton Glunt Funeral Home.  Both Benton Glunt and Tapp Funeral Home are owned by the same person.

If you need choices and funeral arrangements within your budget, I personally recommend the services of Tomblinson Funeral Home.  Do keep in mind that prepaid funeral plans and burial life insurance policies can be moved to the funeral home of your choice.  They do not have to be used at the funeral home where they were purchased.

Here is some important information about “What you need to know about prepaying funeral expenses” from the Kentucky Department of Insurance .   Another good document to review is Funerals: A Consumer Guide from the Federal Trade Commission.

Some are mistakenly calling it Thompson Funeral Home in Henderson KY but it is truly Tomblinson Funeral Home.  At one time they were known as Tompkins Funeral Home.

Funerals and the death of loved ones are not high on the priority list for anyone to have to deal with.

What has your experience been using and working with funeral homes?

Beauty Shop Pickles

Posted on April 10, 2011 Written by Nibby Priest

Just a few weeks ago I was in our historic downtown Henderson KY getting my hair cut at one of our towns oldest beauty shops-a precious place full of some of Henderson Kentucky’s finest operators (now known as stylists) and customers.

It was a late Thursday afternoon.  Thursdays and Fridays at Kelly’s Mane Event (formerly known as the Cardinal Beauty Shop operated by Dorothy Kockritz) are very busy.

One of the hot topics of beauty shop gossip was: “How does the ever popular Downtown Sandwich Shop make those great pickles?”  One of the ladies who was just getting up from the hair dryer said she knew the recipe, and it was easy.   She went on to say that a lady on North Main Street was making the pickles for the Downtown Sandwich Shop, and their business was growing so much that she couldn’t keep up with the demand.  It was also said that she had her hands full building a home in our downtown and that was another reason she had to give up the pickle making.

Here is the recipe as I heard it:

Sweet Pickled Dills

1 gallon of sliced hamburger dills (Sureway and Sam’s Club have these drain them well-you will not use any of this juice)
4 pound bag of sugar  (usually is around 9 1/3 cups)
4 Tablespoons of Pickling Spice (found in the spice isle of grocery)
1 small packet of dried red chili peppers (about 8-10 peppers)  That is if you like it hot!

Mix everything right in the jar!

Tighten the lid of the pickles. Turn jar upside down frequently for the sugar to dissolve.  It usually takes about 24 hours for all the sugar to melt and make the new sweet pickle juice. Keep the pickles on the kitchen counter for seven days turning up and down frequently.

After seven days of turning the pickles place in the refrigerator.  They should keep for  four months.    They are so good you will find them gone way before then.

Have you tried to make the Beauty Shop Pickles?  How did they turn out?

Often times when we think of a beauty shop we think of gossip.  However, it is more than that.  It is creating community and when we have community together we learn and sometimes that can be how to make dill pickles sweet!  Encourage a community of spreading good positive news in your community like they do at Kelly’s Mane Event.

What have you learned at the beauty shop?

Burgoo 2011- Sellout!

Posted on March 10, 2011 Written by Nibby Priest

Writers Update: This was originally written March 12, 1011.  Burgoo is very popular in Henderson KY.  Today October 29, 2011 First Assembly of God  is selling Burgoo, and they are providing containers. They only presold and they have over 50 people on a waiting list. They are SOLD OUT!

What is Burgoo?

[tentblogger-youtube QgFxZ_tX-VI]

Read A Regional Tradition: Burgoo

Burgoo is popular in Henderson Kentucky that is for sure. This coming Saturday morning, March 12, 2011 Riverview School, 133 S. Water St., Henderson KY is selling Burgoo. So popular that they have already sold out as of last week 10 kettles of Burgoo.

Each kettle makes at least 25 gallons and sometimes more.  A long time Supporter of the Riverview Burgoo Connie Flint Mays told me that the making of the Burgoo has become harder since many of the places that used to donate food to benefits  are no longer in business.  Flint-May’s said “businesses like Frank G Schmitt and C L Frank Produce was always generous and gracious when it came to Riverview burgoo time.”  Personally, I think it is ashame that big box stores like the Walmarts of the world cannot fill the gaps like these businesses did in the past.

Not only does Riverview School make good Burgoo, but they own the 10 kettles that are used all over Henderson County for fundraisers.

Pre-sale patrons can pick up from 10-11:30am. Since this is a pre-sale only burgoo and all the tickets have been sold there is a possibility after 11:00 am any extra will be available to the public.

For more information contact Riverview School at 270.827.3674.   They sell the burgoo for $15 per gallon, and that includes a container.  That is  a very fair price, and I think is under priced.  I told Connie without a doubt, they should go to $20 a gallon next Burgoo and be sure to put me on the list of people to call and sell me a ticket.

I don’t have one for this burgoo and really don’t want to stand in line to get some.  So this Saturday I will be Burgoo -less! For those that got some ENJOY!  It’s good stuff!

Read this website for more information about Burgoo.
